Markus Kummer is the Executive Coordinator of the Secretariat supporting the Internet Governance Forum's (IGF) activity since March 2006.[1]

Professional experience[edit | edit source]

Before joining the IGF, Mr. Kummer had several other notable experiences:

  • A career diplomat in the Swiss Foreign Ministry and served several functions in Lisbon, Geneva, Viena, Ankara and Oslo.
  • A member of the delegation of Switzerland participating in the first pahse of Information Society (WSIS) in the World Summit where he led many negotiating groups among which the one on Internet governance.

From 2004 to 2005 he served as the Executive Coordinator of the WSIS Working Group on Internet Governance.

  • Most recently, in February 2011 he also joined the Internet Society and is currently the Vice President. His tasks imply advancing key Internet Security policy positions on problems such as cybersecurity and network neutrality.[2]

Internet Society[edit | edit source]

ISOC or the Internet Society a organisation founded in 1992 nonprofit, with the main mission to provide education in ensuring an open development, evolution and use of Internet for people's benefit from all over the world. The society provides acts as a global clearinghouse for Internet information and education and facilitates Internet related initiatives around the world.[3] In 2007, some negotiations took place for ISOC chapters to become members of the At-large community (ALC) of ICANN.[4]

Internet Governance Forum[edit | edit source]

The main purpose of IGF is to support the General Secretary of United Nations in carying on the mandate from WSIS (World Summit on Information Society)in order to build a new forum for policy dialogue between multi-stakeholders.[5]
