W.G. Champion Mitchell (Champ) is a member of the board of directors at Argan Inc, 41st Parameter, Research Triangle Institute, and the UNC Board of Governors.[1] Until June 2008, Mitchell was the Chairman and CEO of Network Solutions.[2] He joined Network Solutions in 2001 and spearheaded the company's buyout and separation from Verisign in November 2003.[3]
Past Work
Before becoming Chairman and CEO of Network Solutions, Champ served as VeriSign's Executive Vice President, and before that, General Manager of its Mass Markets Division. From 1997-2000 he founded, managed, and later sold two successful start-up companies specializing in VoIP.[4] Earlier in his career, Champ was Executive Vice President and COO of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., where he played an integral role in the largest leveraged buyout in history - the company's buyout by KKR. Prior to this, Champ served as a lawyer and partner with Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge and Rice in Winston-Salem, N.C.[5][6]
Education
Champ received his juris doctor with the highest honors from the University of North Carolina and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina.
