.nl is the ccTLD for the Netherlands. It is managed by Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland (SIDN).[1]

Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

.nl is an Open Use ccTLD. Anyone, living or based anywhere in the world, may apply to register a .nl domain name.

If an irregularity is reported to SIDN or discovered, and they conclude that a .nl domain name is being used in an unlawful or criminal way (for example, to publish unlawful or criminal content on a website), they may immediately remove the .nl domain name temporarily or permanently from the zone file, unilaterally terminate its registration and take any other action that they consider necessary at the time.[2]

Characters[edit | edit source]

The only characters you're allowed to have in your domain name are letters (a - z), numbers (0 - 9) and hyphens (-). Also:

  • if you include a hyphen, it must have a letter or number on each side of it;
  • your domain name must have at least two characters, but no more than sixty-three.[3]
