Before .tl, East Timor used the .tp domain following its independence in 2002, but transitioned to the .tl domain in 2005 in line with the ISO 3166-1 standard which designates "TL" as the country's code.[2]

According to the website TLD-List, anyone can buy a .tl domain name as there are no specific restrictions or residency requirements.[2]
