More information:

.afrique was discussed as a potential new GeoTLD in ICANN's new gTLD Program. The organization AfTLD has expressed an intent to apply for .africa, and consequently has noted that "We are not just interested in .africa only, but we want to also take on .afrique, which is the French version of .africa. It’s only natural for us to do this because at least 50% of Africa speaks French.”[1] It is unclear if they actually intend to apply or merely have an interest in the extension.

The english version, .africa, is one of the most intensely and publicly sought after TLDs.

There was no application submitted for .afrique in the 2012 New gTLD expansion round.
