.delta is a Brand TLD being proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The applicant is Delta Air Lines, Inc.[1]
The application was subject to a GAC Early Warning from Nigeria. The warning system is noted as a strong recommendation on behalf of national governments to the ICANN Board that a given TLD application should be denied as it stands. Applicants are encouraged to work with objecting GAC members.[2]
The warning recommends that the applicant withdraw its application as the string coincides with the name of a Nigerian region and state. The representative notes that the people and government of this region will likely want to secure their presence on the Internet in the future and that a commercial entity should not be given rights to the name of a geographic area.[3]
