Sarah Kiden is a technologist and researcher, passionate about open source solutions, Internet Policy, and public interest technology. She is a researcher at Northumbria University. Before that, she was a Marie Curie Research Fellow on Open Design of Trusted Things (OpenDoTT), a joint Ph.D. program between the University of Dundee and Mozilla, exploring how to build a more open, secure, and trustworthy Internet of Things (IoT). Her project explores possibilities for smaller-scale local IoT technology and how communities and neighborhoods can be supported in making the best use of them. [1]

Previously, Sarah was a 2017/2018 Ford-Mozilla Open Web Fellow[2], hosted by Research ICT Africa (RIA) in Cape Town, South Africa. She worked on an Internet measurements project[3], focusing on broadband performance, Internet peering and users behavior in Africa. Prior to this, she led the systems team at Uganda Christian University as the Head of Systems and was a Web & eLearning Administrator before that[4][5].

She has also contributed to capacity-building initiatives at the Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU), training network and system engineers on aspects like campus network design, network monitoring, and system security.

Sarah's first ICANN meeting was ICANN 47 in Durban, South Africa. She is involved with ICANN through ISOC[6], though her entry into Internet governance was through DiploFoundation. She was selected as an ICANN Fellow for ICANN 51 in Los Angeles.[7] She has additionally attended ICANN 50 in London, United Kingdom and ICANN 55 in Marrakech, Morocco and other ICANN meetings. She has been involved in the At-Large Community and the AFRALO Secretariat and is an ALAC member.

Sarah holds an MSc in Information Systems and BSc in Information Technology.
