Filiz Yilmaz is the Senior Director of Participation and Engagement at ICANN,[1] where she has been working since October 2010. Inspired by her own experience as a first-time ICANN meeting attendee at ICANN Seoul, Filiz established the Newcomers track and lounge in order to make the experience less overwhelming for future first-timers.

Filiz participates in RIPE, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRONIC, ARIN, ISOC Turkey, and other IT groups in Turkey.[2]

Career History

Prior to joining ICANN, Filiz was the Policy Development Manager at RIPE NCC, where she was responsible for developing work plans, managing the activities of Policy Development Office, and coordinating the bottom-up, consensus-based Internet policy making processes used by RIPE and RIPE NCC. From 2001-2006, she was the IP Resource Coordinator at RIPE NCC.[3]

Yilmaz previously worked with the company who brought the Internet to Turkey.[4]

She started her career working at Middle East Technical University in 1996 as the User Support and Informatics Group Assistant Manager and then as a Research Assistant.[5] Her thesis, "A Computational Analysis of Information Structure in Turkish," was recognized as the Institute's thesis of the year.[6]

Education

She holds a BSc. degree in Mathematics and an MSc in Mathematics and Cognitive Science from Orta Dogu Teknik Üniversitesi.[7] Her interest lies in the interplay between humans and technology, and making the internet more humaine and relatable.[8]
