Beran Gillen is a driven young woman who is passionate about the effects of ICTs and how it can be used to better our lives. Beran returned to her native Gambia after acquiring both her Bachelor of Science (First Class Honours) in Computing Science and her Masters in Computer Networks (Distinction) at Middlesex University in North London, United Kingdom.

As the Deputy Director, ICT at the Directorate of National Treasury (DNT) under the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs in The Gambia, she oversaw the technical aspect of all ICTs at the ministry. This included the deployment of Gambia’s first automated Government accounting system, the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) of The Gambia Government funded by the World Bank.

In her four-year tenure as the Vice President of the Information Technology Association of The Gambia (ITAG), she has spearheaded various activities in the areas of

  • ICT in Schools
  • Girls in ICT Program
  • Set up of The Gambia IXP
  • Set up a mentoring program between the association and tertiary institutions in The Gambia

and is currently working on the re-delegation of .gm ccTLD back to The Gambia. She has been re-elected as Vice President of the Association in a recent AGM.

Beran boasts of a diverse work experience ranging from Government and International Relations to the administration of National Passport Systems. She is a two-time ICANN fellow and has hosted several National IGFs for The Gambia. She is the current Secretary of the newly set up Serrekunda Internet Exchange Point in The Gambia. As an advisor to different agencies in the ICT sector including The Gambia Government in the GAC, she is at the forefront in the development of ICT Policy in The Gambia. 

She is an active member of ISOC Gambia. She is currently leading the application process the certifying ISOC Gambia as an At Large Structure in ICANN.
