NIC Mexico or Network Information Center Maxico is the ICANN accredited organization responsible for management of .mx ccTLD and National Internet Registry which provides IP space to registrars.[1] It started accepting registrars for registration of .mx domain names in 2008 and now has 180 registrars.[2] NIC Mexico is a founding member of LACNIC and LACTLD besides being an active member of ccNSO and ICANN community.[3] Together with LACNIC it is struggling for Latino TLD to get approved by ICANN.[4]

NIC Mexico signed Accountability framework with ICANN in 2009.[5]

History

In 1989 The Technological Institute of Advanced Studies of Monterrey (ITESM), in Monterrey, Mexico established its network. In 1995 it was given the official name of Network information center of Mexico. In the beginning .mx was reserved only for academics domain names due to which it had only 45 domains registered until 1992. The registration was totally stopped in 1996 which was reopened in 2009. From then on Nic Mexico is working for the popularity of .mx in the country and is successful so far by registering 0.5 million domain names up till now.[6]

Events

NIC Mexico co-sponsored Technical Aspects Workshop for ccTLDs in September 2010.[7] It sponsored ICANN San Juan meeting in 2007.[8]
