Beijing Tele-info Network Technology Co.[edit | edit source]

Excerpted from application response to question #18:

"Under the full support of China Academy of Telecommunication Research of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China (“CATR”), Beijing Tele-info Network Technology Co., Ltd. (“Tele-info Ltd.”) applies for a registry of the Chinese gTLD “.信息” on the basis of CATR’s years of knowledge and understanding of the information industry and its mission of serving the information industry and Chinese Internet Community.

After a carefully selection process, Tele-info Ltd. has signed a binding term sheet with China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) pursuant to which CNNIC will provide back-end registry services for “.信息”. Tele-info Ltd. aims to leverage the technological expertise and proven channel management experience of CNNIC to provide “.信息” Chinese IDN domain name services and makes it the worldʹs most advanced Chinese domain name registry services."[2]

Afilias[edit | edit source]

Excerpted from applicant response to question #18 in TLD application:

"Afilias in this application is applying for the Chinese IDN string of .INFO only. This is not an application for .INFO (ASCII). The true IDN string will be referred to throughout this application as .INFO (CHINESE IDN) for simplicity of review by ICANN.

Mission and purpose

.INFO (Chinese IDN) is intended to become one of the most common and easily accessible TLDs on the internet, especially targeted to Chinese speakers. It will vastly expand options for creating domains, and give new opportunities to those who have been unable to obtain a desired domain name in Chinese in existing TLDs. Most importantly, it provides the opportunity for the full domain name to be represented in their native language.

As of 2010, there were 444.9 million Chinese-speaking Internet users, making it the 2nd most common language in use on the Internet (Source: http:⁄⁄www.internetworldstats.com⁄stats7.htm). The interest and demand for new domains in Chinese is only expected to grow. The .INFO (Chinese IDN) TLD will help facilitate the expansion of those opportunities for Chinese-speaking Internet users.

While we expect long-term growth as Internet penetration increases, we expect that awareness and early adoption will ramp up gradually and the first few years will experience a modest adoption rate. Therefore, we anticipate that we will have 5,000 domains under management (DUMs) after three years.[3]
