.direct is a proposed top level domain name (TLD) to ICANN's new gTLD expansion program.
Current Applicant
- Donuts (Half Trail, LLC), the company has filed for 307 new gLDs, each under different company names.[1] This applicant submitted a Public Interest Commitment, which can be downloaded here.
Previous Applicant
- Dish DBS Corporation - The company operates the Dish Network offering direct broadcast satellite to millions of customers in the United States. The company applied for the string as Brand gTLD.[2]
There was a Legal Rights Objection filed by Directv against Dish Network; the WIPO panel upheld the objection, effectively killing off Dish's application, as it cannot proceed.[3]
Objection
An official Legal Rights Objection was filed by The DirecTV Group Inc., against Dish DBS Corporation.[4]
A Legal Rights Objection, as defined by the ICANN approved mediator, WIPO, is when, "third parties may file a formal objection to an application on several grounds, including, for trademark owners and Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs) [..] When such an objection is filed, an independent panel (comprised of one or three experts) will determine whether the applicant’s potential use of the applied-for gTLD would be likely to infringe [..] the objector’s existing trademark, or IGO name or acronym."[5]
