.ggee is a Brand TLD being proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The applicant is GMO Internet.[1]
Application Details[edit | edit source]
The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:
"G-Gee is a Smartphone game platform. Launched in 2010, G-Gee has over 7 million members in 136 countries. As a secure distribution platform, G-Gee provides developers with fast and economical entry into the Android market. Over 300 games are distributed on G-Gee including world renowned game titles and original content.
G-Gee is operated by GMO Internet Group companies GMO GameCenter K.K. (the service operator) in Japan and its two subsidiaries GMO GameCenter Korea and GMO GameCenter US. The trademark rights are held by parent company, GMO Internet, Inc. who is the company applying for the .GGEE TLD (the Applicant).
GMO Internet Inc. is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. It is the company at the core of GMO Internet Group, consisting of 84 companies in 8 countries. The Group is the number one provider of domain registration, web hosting, ecommerce and payment gateway solutions, and online FX trading services in Japan. Under the corporate slogan “Japan’s leading All-in Provider of Internet Services” the group operates in four business segments, Web Infrastructure & Ecommerce, Internet Media, Internet Securities and Social Media & Smartphone Platform.
.GGEE will serve as the unifying domain surrounding for G-Gee services globally.
.GGEE is a new type of TLD in that the top-level string, not the second level, represents the brand name. It has several important elements of a good Internet address: direct, simple, easy-to-understand, and memorable. These elements are also important for marketing and branding activities, therefore the Service operator expects that the TLD will play a stronger part than ever in marketing activities.
The existence of this kind of differentiated TLD will encourage domain name registrants to consider the top-level as well as the second level when choosing an appropriate identity on the Internet. Also, registries and registrars will be encouraged to differentiate in terms of services, operations, systems, pricing, support, etc., promoting positive competition, differentiation, and innovation.
In addition, .GGEE is different from other existing TLDs because it will be only available to GMO GameCenter and its stakeholders. With its restrictive rules and comprehensive abuse handling processes, the Applicant expects minimal abusive domain name registrations in the .GGEE name space. This means that information provided by .GGEE will be reliable and Internet users will be able to enjoy the name space with confidence. .GGEE will deliver unprecedented trust to Internet users, which GMO believes will spur further positive competition and innovation in the industry."[2]
