NIXI (National Internet eXchange of India) is a non-profit organization registered under Section – 25 of the Companies Act 1956 on July 19, 2003.[1] It was designated to neutrally facilitate the exchange of domestic traffic between peering ISP members. The company has managed the .in ccTLD registry since 2005.

The organization's Internet exchange points are located in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderaba, Mohali, Mumbai, Lucknow and Kolkota.[2]

.in ccTLD[edit | edit source]

.in is the ccTLD for India. IANA initially delegated the ccTLD in the DNS root zone in 1989. The National Centre for Software Technology (NCST) was the sponsoring organization and initially served as the manager and operator of the .in ccTLD.[3]

In 2002, NCST merged with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), a scientific research and development institution of the Ministry of Information Technology.C-DAC managed and operated the .in registry until December of 2004. The Secretary of the Department of Information Technology subsequently issued and order designating and appointing National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) as the national registry.[4]

NIXI and ICANN[edit | edit source]

In 2009, ICANN received a request from NIXI to re-delegate the .in ccTLD to the organization as the new registry operator in India and it was evaluated by IANA and reported that there is no foreseen transfer issues since NIXI is already serving as the de facto operator of the .in registry.[5]

In addition, NIXI particpated in the ICANN 31st meeting in New Delhi that was hosted by the government of India.[6]
