In the News
Jeffery Moss is VP and Chief Security Officer of ICANN and the founder and director of Black Hat and DEFCON, a global technical security conference and a hacker conference respectively. He is also an Advisor at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council. Jeff is known in the Internet community as a hacker and he uses The Dark Tangent as an alias. In 1992, he established DEFCON, a hacker community that is believed to have the largest amount of hacker members worldwide. In 1997, he created the Black Hat, a company focused on educating the Internet community with the latest security technology and practices by conducting global conferences. Mr. Moss was appointed by the Department of Homeland Security Advisory Council as Advisor in 2009. The ICANN CEO Search Committee was formed following Rod Beckstrom's August 2011 announcement that he will not continue as CEO past the fulfillment of his term, completed on 1 July 2012. The topic of CEO succession planning was first discussed at a Board meeting on 17 September 2011, where they directed the Board Governance Committee to appoint members to a CEO Search Process Management Work Committee. The committee is contracting with search firm Odgers Berndtson in Brussels, who will be handling application inquiries and expressions of interest. In January 2012, ICANN began openly advertising the position in places such as The Economist.
