The Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) brings together smaller stakeholder groups, which in turn bring together constituencies and other groups, together into one Supporting Organization to develop policies, form consensus, and make recommendations related to gTLDs to the ICANN Board. This body was previously known as the Domain Name Supporting Organization (DNSO), which it replaced in 2003.

On 1 October 2016, 18 years after the creation of ICANN, it's contract with the United States Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration expired, marking the official transition of the oversight of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority to the global multistakeholder community. .web is a proposed new generic top level domain name (gTLD) to ICANN's new gTLD expansion program. On 28 July 2016, NU DOT CO LLC won right to the string with the winning bid of $135 ICANN auction of last resort.
