The ccTLD .cc is the country code for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.[1]. It is an Open Use ccTLD.[2] Made up of 27 coral atolls, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are a non-self-governing overseas territory of Australia, with a population of less than 600 by the most recent count.[3]
Registry Operations[edit | edit source]
The manager for the ccTLD is eNIC Cocos (Keeling) Islands Pty. Ltd., a wholly owned Australian subsidiary of Verisign doing business as Island Internet Services. eNIC's authority to operate the .cc TLD was granted by the Australian government.[4] ICANN and eNIC subsequently formalized their relationship through an exchange of letters under ICANN's Accountability Framework[5]
Technical registry operations are provided by Verisign.[6]
Usage and Statistics[edit | edit source]
The .cc TLD has over one million registrations, placing it in the top 50 ccTLDs as measured by active registrations.[7] Verisign markets .cc as an alternative to generic TLDs.[8]
The TLD is a frequent source of WIPO disputes, and is in the top ten of WIPO proceedings by ccTLD.[9] The disputed domain names are typically contested on the basis of trademark infringement.
