Gihan Dias

Dr. Gihan Dias is a professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the University of Moratuwa.[1][2] He has been working at the University of Moratuwa since 1985,[3] and is currently the Director of its Centre on Localised Applications.

Prof. Dias is also Domain Registrar, CEO, and Founder of the .lk Domain Registry. He has been at the fore of the country's ccTLD management since 1990; Dr. Dias is currently involved in Sri Lanka's IDN deployment.[4]

He is also a Trustee of The Internet Society, a member of the IETF, IDNA Working Group, and the Unicode Consortium. Prof. Dias is an advisor to TechCERT, which is the first computer security readiness team in Sri Lanka.[5]

Career History

Prof. Dias is a pioneer in Sri Lankan networking. He was the manager of the Lanka Education and Research Network from 1995 to 2003. He was the Founding Programme Director of the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka.[6]

He has edited several CSE Staff Research Publications.[7]

He has held different positions at LAcNet:

  • President (1991-1992)
  • Director (2000-2001)
  • Director (2005-2006)[8]

Education

Prof. Dias graduated in B.Sc Engineering from the University of Moratuwa in 1985 and then completed a doctorate in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California in 1992.[9]

He can speak English and Sinhala.[10]
