In 1995 it was given the official name of Network information center of Mexico. In the beginning .mx was reserved only for academics domain names due to which it had only 45 domains registered until 1992. The registration was totally stopped in 1996 which was reopened in 2009. From then on Nic Mexico is working for the popularity of .mx in the country and is successful so far by registering 0.5 million domain names up till now.[6]
