Generic top-level domain

"Generic" Top Level Domain (gTLDs) are TLDs with three or more characters. Generally speaking, an unsponsored gTLD Registry operates under policies established by the global Internet community directly through the ICANN process. .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net, .org, and .pro are unsponsored TLDs. .Asia is an example of a sponsored TLD.

Going forward, TLDs will be identified as either "open" or "community."
