.vn is the ccTLD for Vietnam. It is managed by the Viet Nam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC).[1]

Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

Domain names are available for individuals and organizations to register, but must follow the requirements:

  • a domain name must not contain words or phrases intruding upon the national sovereignty, interest and security, or violating social ethics, fine traditional customs and values;
  • the registrant must be clear and serious and avoid causing any confusion or misunderstanding by abusing polysyllabic and polysemantic attributes and omitting accent marks in Vietnamese language.[2]

Second-level Domains[edit | edit source]

The following second-level domains are available:

  • .com.vn: for organizations and individuals involved in commercial activities;
  • .biz.vc: for organizations and individuals involved in business activities, equivalent to ".com.vn";
  • .edu.vn: for organizations and individuals involved in education and training activities;
  • .gov.vn: for central- and local-level State agencies and organizations;
  • .net.vn: for organizations and individuals involved in the establishment and provision of online services;
  • .org.vn: for organizations involved in political, cultural and social activities;
  • .int.vn: for Vietnam-based international organizations;
  • .ac.vn: for organizations and individuals involved in research activities;
  • .pro.vn: for organizations and individuals involved in highly-specialized domains;
  • .info.vn: for organizations and individuals involved in the creation, distribution and supply of information;
  • .health.vn: for organizations and individuals involved in pharmaceutical and medical activities;
  • .name.vn: for organizations and individuals to register under names such as full names, abbreviations, trade names, aliases, etc., of organizations and individuals;
  • .id.vn: for individuals who are Vietnamese citizens to register to use personal images, products and personal brands in the online environment;
  • .io.vn: for organizations and individuals that register to use technology applications, platforms and services in the network environment;
  • .ai.vn: for organizations and individuals that register to use for activities and services related to the field of artificial intelligence, or any other domain name categories to be regulated by the Ministry of Information and Communication;
  • .hanoi.vn, haiphong.vn, etc. (provinces extensions): for organizations and individuals with relationship to municipalities and provinces in Vietnam.[3]

Characters[edit | edit source]

A domain name:

  • must have at least one or a set of character(s) under top-level domain ".vn". At each level of domain name, no more than 63 characters (for Vietnamese IDN, the length of the string would be after conversed into ASCII string);
  • may contain alphabetical characters from a to z, numerical characters from 0 to 9; Vietnamese symbols defined in the table of Vietnamese letters, and all characters and symbols accepted by domain name servers. Lowercase or uppercase letters and symbols do not matter;
  • may contain hyphen "-" but do not begin or end a domain name with this symbol and do not use two hyphens placed next to each other in a domain name.[2]
