Anna Higgins was an intern for ICANNWiki and Next Century Cities for the summer of 2018. She is a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in public policy at the University of Virginia. She is based in Washington, D.C. for the summer, but has lived in Charlottesville since 2014. She grew up in Cherry Hill, N.J., and also hails from Richmond, Va.

Career History

ICANNWiki and Next Century Cities (May- August 2018)

In her internship with ICANNWiki, Anna focuses on developing content and research on issues of Internet governance. At Next Century Cities, she researches broadband deployment policy and assists with event planning initiatives.

The Cavalier Daily (August 2014- January 2018)

Anna served as news editor of The Cavalier Daily, U.Va.’s independent student newspaper. There, she directed coverage and reported on university issues as well as national stories such as Rolling Stone’s “A Rape on Campus” article, Otto Warmbier’s release from North Korea and subsequent death, and the August 2017 white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, Va.

Legal Aid Justice Center (June-August 2017)

As a communications and development intern, Anna worked on website development, press list management, editing and writing content, and donor relations during her time at the Legal Aid Justice Center in Charlottesville, Va.

Clinton Foundation (June-August 2016)

Anna served as a communications intern at the Clinton Foundation in New York, N.Y., where she edited and wrote content, managed press lists, compiled clips, and assisted with media strategy.

VCUHealth (July 2015-January 2017)

During her time as a student worker at VCUHealth, Anna researched and wrote a strategic plan for the health system to better implement its online patient portal. She worked closely with care providers, electronic medical records, and administration staff to research issues such as patient wait times and patient and provider portal usage.

ICANN and Internet Governance Participation

Anna began studying Internet and media policy as an undergraduate. She is most interested in First Amendment issues, broadband access, and telehealth.

Education

Anna graduated from the University of Virginia in 2018 with a B.A. in Spanish and a B.A. in Media Studies with a concentration in Media Policy and Ethics. She will graduate with her master of public policy in 2019 from the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. During her college career, Anna has studied and lived in Valencia, Spain, and was involved with U.Va.’s student newspaper, the Phi Sigma Pi honor fraternity, and Charlottesville’s local CBS affiliate news station.
