In June 2011, the City Council approved the application for the .gent geographical TLD via ICANN's New gTLD Program. The Council aims to use the .gent string to improve the direct link of its citizens, companies and organizations to the city and the region. The council also aims to provide a more secure online space to internet users while surfing on the city's website. The City Council partnered with CityTLD to handle the application and management of the .gent domain name space. [2]
