LACNIC is the [[RIR]] responsible for the allocation of [[IP]] addresses and other related issues (such as the Autonomous System Numbers and Reserve Resolution) throughout the Latin American and Caribbean region.
LACNIC is a non-profit organization like the other [[RIR]]s and its members must comply with its membership requirements. The main members of LACNIC are [[ISP]]s (Internet Service Providers) and other Internet related organizations.

==LACNIC History==
The agreement for founding LACNIC was signed in August 22nd year 1999 during an [[ICANN]] meeting. At that time, [[ARIN]] (American Registry for Internet Numbers) was in charge of the Latin America and Caribbean region. Thus, LACNIC developed a business plan and sent it to [[ARIN]] and there a transition required to enable LACNIC to become the fourth [[RIR]] at that time. The other three [[RIR]]s at that time were: [[APNIC]] (Asia Pacific Network Information Centre) , [[ARIN]] (American Registry for Internet Numbers) and [[RIPE NCC]] (Regional Internet Registry for Europe, Middle East and parts of Central Asia). <ref>[http://www.apnic.net/publications/news/2002/lacnic LACNIC History]</ref>
LACNIC has the headquarters located in Moteviedo, Uruguay and was established in 2001 even if the business plan was send and approved in 1999. LACNIC was formally recognized by [[ICANN]] in 2020 during [[ICANN]]'s meeting in Shanghai.

In order to fulfill its objectives, LACNIC has the following set of functions:
* To deal with [[DNS]] delegations which must be reversed;
* To allocate the appropriate amount of Internet addresses spaces according to IPv6 respectively IPv4, as well as Autonomous System Numbers;
* To represent the interests of Internet users and members of the Latin American and Caribbean at global level;
* To maintain the [[Whois]] database representative for the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The structure of LACNIC consists of:
* The LACNIC members which are the most important decisional part: The members influence the activities and services of LACNIC as well as candidates elected for the Executive Board of LACNIC. Other powers of the members are related to the acceptance of LANCIC new schemes and Financial Reports at the end of each financial year.
* General Assembly: LACNIC ruling body
* Board of Director with an Executive Director subordinated: These directors are being nominated and elected by LACNIC members. The Board of Directors consists of six members who eventually appoint the Executive Director.
* Control Organ: Manages and analyzed the activities and actions of the Board of Directors.
