Ethan Katsh is the Director of the Center for Information Technology and Dispute Resolution and a Professor Emeritus of Legal Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has authored two books on law and technology, The Electronic Media and The Transformation of Law (Oxford University Press, 1989) and Law in a Digital World (Oxford University Press, 1995) and many law reviews and periodical articles. He is a graduate of Yale Law School and co-founder of the Online Ombuds Office, a project funded by the Hewlett Foundation to explore dispute resolution in cyberspace.[1]
Katsh is the founder of the field of online dispute resolution (ODR). Along with Janet Rifkin, he conducted the eBay Pilot Project in 1999 that led to eBay’s current system. With Rifkin, he wrote Online Dispute Resolution: Resolving Conflicts in Cyberspace (2001) and co-author with Orna Rabinovich-Einy Digital Justice: Technology and the Internet of Disputes (2017, Oxford University Press). He was the Recipient of the 2017 D’Alemberte-Raven Award from the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution. Katsh has also served as principal online dispute resolution consultant for the Office of Government Information Services (OGIS), the federal agency mandated to provide mediation in Freedom of Information Act disputes.[2]
