.cv is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Cape Verde. It is managed by the Agência Reguladora Multissectorial da Economia (ARME).[1]

Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

Both individuals and companies are allowed to register a .cv domain name. This is also valid for .com.cv.

Domain names are not allowed if they:

  • clearly correspond to obscene language and words and/or expressions that are contrary to the law;
  • correspond to a name already registered in the same hierarchy;
  • correspond to the reproduction of a widely known and recognized trademark, name, or designation that constitutes an abusive and bad-faith appropriation of a legally protected third-party right or interest;
  • correspond to a national designation of origin or geographical indication that is protected under applicable law;
  • correspond to a geographical related name. Geographic names can only be registered directly under .cv by a competent administrative authority.[2]

Second-level Domains[edit | edit source]

.gov.cv[edit | edit source]

.gov.cv is for:

    • offices of governments members;
    • services, agencies, and projects integrated into the Direct Administration of the State;
    • non-permanent structures directly dependent on the entities mentioned in the previous points, upon request from them.

The process of registering domain names under ".gov.cv" is carried out with the entity responsible for managing the infrastructure of the Rede Tecnológica Privativa do Estado (RTPE) (English: State's Private Technological Network).[2]

.org.cv[edit | edit source]

.org.cv is for non-profit organizations. The domain name under ".org.cv" must match the name of its holder, an abbreviation or acronym of the holder, or the name of projects or actions developed or to be developed by the holder.[2]

.edu.cv[edit | edit source]

Any educational institution can register a domain name under ".edu.cv."

The domain name under ".edu.cv" must match the name assigned in the document that identifies/recognizes the legal nature of the educational institution, or it may be an abbreviation or acronym of that name, provided that, in the latter case, it does not result in an inversion or addition to the name.[2]

Characters and IDNs[edit | edit source]

  • The domain name must have between 2 and 63 characters;
  • the domain name can consist of the letters in the Latin script (a-z), Arabic numbers (0-9) and special characters (à, â, ã, ç, é, ê, í, ó, ô, õ e ú);
  • as a separator between words, only the character "-" (hyphen) is accepted, and it cannot be used at the beginning or end of the domain name;
  • a domain name that begins with "xn" cannot contain two consecutive hyphens "--" in the third and fourth positions.[2]
