Griffin Barnett is an Intellectual Property staff attorney in Mayer Brown’s Washington DC office. His practice focuses on matters involving intellectual property law and the Internet, including trademark counseling and enforcement, counseling and enforcement relating to Internet domain names, online intermediary liability and Internet governance, and social and mobile media, both domestically and internationally.
Griffin is highly knowledgeable on the domain name industry, including management of global domain name portfolios and recovery of domain names from cybersquatters worldwide. He also routinely counsels clients on new generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) management strategies, as well as Internet governance matters impacting intellectual property. His practice frequently involves new developments in the Internet ecosystem and within the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Griffin also has experience with trademark selection, clearance, prosecution, registration and enforcement, as well as with handling trademark administrative proceedings and federal court litigation involving trademark infringement, dilution, unfair competition and cybersquatting.
Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Griffin worked in the intellectual property and Internet group of another large law firm, and prior to that, the intellectual property and Internet group of a small boutique firm.
ICANN Involvement
Griffin is a member of the Intellectual Property Constituency of the GNSO. Griffin is a member of the GNSO New gTLD Subsequent Procedures PDP Working Group, the GNSO Next-Generation RDS PDP Working Group, the GNSO Rights Protection Mechanisms Review PDP Working Group, and a member of the Cross-Community Working Group on Enhancing ICANN Accountability Work Stream 2 sub-teams on Jurisdiction and on Human Rights.
Involvement in Internet Governance
Griffin is not actively involved in Internet governance bodies outside of ICANN.
