.tours is a delegated TLD in ICANN's New gTLD Program. Donuts (Sugar Station, LLC) manages the TLD and is its Registry. The proposed application succeeded and was delegated to the Root Zone on 24 March, 2015.[1] Google applied for a similar string, .tour.[2]
Application Details[edit | edit source]
Many of Donuts' applications, including this one, seem to have been applied for using the same boiler-plate application in which the TLD is defined as a means of providing greater expression on the Internet and will be an open TLD without pre-registration policies. It notes its plans to adhere with all registration policies required by ICANN and its intent to have remediation and takedown policies clearly defined to fit within these requirements. Pre-registration verification will not be used and this as defined as causing "more harm than benefit by denying domain access to legitimate registrants." They intend to control abuse through "extensive user and rights protections."[3]
String Confusion Objection[edit | edit source]
Google submitted a String Confusion Objection to the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), saying that the .tour and .tours strings would confuse Internet users. Panelist Robert M Nau ruled on the side of Google. This decision will put Donuts, the sole applicant for .tours, into a contention set with Google for the .tour gTLD.[4]
