Application Details[edit | edit source]

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"The mission of Microsoft Corporation is to transform the way people work, play and communicate throughout the world through the provision of software, services and hardware. Microsoft does business throughout the world, with offices in more than 100 countries and over 90,000 employees. Every day, billions of consumers and business work, play, and communicate using Microsoft software, services, and hardware. Microsoft’s free Hotmail web-based e-mail service allows its more than 360 million users worldwide to access their accounts from any Internet-connected device, regardless of location or ISP. Since acquiring the Hotmail e-mail service in 1997, Microsoft has developed it into what PC Magazine called in February 2011 “The most popular webmail service in the world.” We attribute its popularity to strong security and anti-spam measures and the flexibility it offers users who wish to undertake tasks such as editing documents, sharing photos, files or folders or syncing mail, calendar and contacts. The Mission of the .hotmail registry is to lay the groundwork to provide consumers and businesses who interact with Microsoft through the .hotmail registry with a more secure and authentic experience, to promote the Hotmail email service, and to protect the Hotmail trademark and associated intellectual property. In our 2010 Annual Report, we stated, “We are playing a key role in delivering the tools and technologies that are making information technology more powerful, more useful, more affordable and more accessible.” Our Hotmail email service exemplifies this role: More than 300 million people use Hotmail to send nearly 10 billion messages every day. We are assessing the opportunities that a new gTLD has for the delivery of secure communications, products, and services.
