The Lao National Internet Center (LANIC) is the sponsoring organization for the .la ccTLD, representing the Lao People's Democratic Republic (commonly known as Laos).[1] It also manages the internationalized domain for Laos, .ລາວ.[2] The organization provides administrative and technical registry functions.
History[edit | edit source]
In 1996, management of the .la domain was initially delegated with a specific employee within the Lao government as the administrative contact.[3] After forming LANIC in 2002, the government of Laos requested and was granted redelegation of the .la ccTLD.[3] As part of that effort, LANIC entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with ICANN.[4] LANIC joined the ccNSO in 2019.[5][6][7]
.la and .ລາວ Delegation to LANIC[edit | edit source]
On 15 February 2010, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) assigned LANIC the management of the .la top-level domain (TLD) under a ministerial decision. This was later revised on 15 July 2016, allowing LANIC to also manage the .ລາວ TLD.
On 14 December 2016, LANIC and MPT conducted the 2016 Lao ICT Expo, where they gathered community support for the Lao Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) application.
On 4 January 2018, an application was submitted to ICANN’s ccTLD IDN Fast Track Process for the string "ລາວ" to represent Lao PDR in Lao script. The request was approved on 13 December 2018, as the IDN Fast Track DNS Stability Panel found no threats to DNS stability or security.
In June 2019, LANIC requested the delegation of the .ລາວ TLD, which was granted in 2020.[8]
