Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi was elected as the Chairman of the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) in ICANN and has been the liason from the GAC to the ICANN Board. He was subsequently reelected for a second and final term in 2005 at the meeting held in Argentina.[1] Sharil has been particularly involved in the issues relating to IDNs, and was involved in the early development of identifying problems in the deployment of IDNs.
Work in MCMC
Mr. Mohamed Tarmizi was appointed as the Chairman of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on October 16th, 2011.[2]. Prior to that, he served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the regulatory body beginning from June 16th, 2008.[3]
Until April, 2006, Sharil served as the Senior Advisor in the Office of the Chairman and General Manager in the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). He then left his position at MCMC and is now with a strategic and financial advisory firm called BinaFikir. He has been appointed as the special envoy for Malaysia in the GAC by the MCMC, in recognition of his contribution and interest in the GAC.
In May, 2006, he was positioned as a commission member in MCMC, by the Government of Malaysia. At the time he was one of the seven Commissioners serving on the Board of MCMC.
As a senior staff member at MCMC, from 2000 to 2006, he led the development of the convergence legislation in Malaysia. This legislation was the first of its kind. This enabled licensing migration to a convergence framework, 3G mobile systems, broadband initiatives, capacity building programmes on bridging the digital divide and self-regulation in the communications and multimedia sector within the MCMC.[4]
International Collaboration
He has collaborated with many international organizations for development projects, and speaking and training programs. He has collaborated with:
- International Telecoms Union (ITU)
- The Commonwealth Telecoms Organisation (CTO)
- The Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT)
- The Pacific Telecoms Council (PTC)
He was also involved in advising multinational clients in relation to their participation in the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Project and was particularly involved in two out of the seven initial MSC Flagship Projects in Malaysia.
Work as an Attorney
Before joining the MCMC, Sharil was an attorney specializing in construction law and the privatization of utilities. He has also has acted in an advisory capacity to multi-national clients in domestic and foreign projects.
Education
He received his LL.B(Hons) from the University of Wales.[5]
