Until April, 2006, Sharil served as the Senior Advisor in the Office of the Chairman and General Manager in the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission ([[MCMC]]). In April 2006 he left his position at [[MCMC]] and is now with a strategic and financial advisory firm called BinaFikir. He has been appointed as the special envoy for Malaysia in [[GAC]] by the [[MCMC]], in recognition of his contribution and interest in [[GAC]].

As a senior staff member in MCMC (from 2000 to 2006) he led the developent of the convergence legislation in Malaysia. This was reported as first of this kind of legislation.
