.gree is a Community Brand TLD that was proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The applicant was GREE, Inc.,[1] which is a Japanese social networking service, the name comes from the phrase "Six De"gree"s of Separation" postulated by social psychologist Stanley Milgram in 1967, which states that everyone in the world can connect themselves to anyone else on earth through approximately six connections.[2] The company, and hence community, was first established in 2004.

The applicant later withdrew their application for the string.

"In March 2007 the community had 1 million members. By April 2009 membership had grown 10-fold to exceed 10 million in approximately 2 years. After OpenFeint joined the GREE group, in December 2011 total membership reached 189.2 million. As the same time, market value of GREE, Inc.was over JPY600 billion (USD7,730 million)."

"[R]egistrations in the .gree TLD will be divided into two categories: A. GREE SNS Community Operator Registration, Domain names registered in this category must be registered solely by an entity that contributes to operation of the community.
