.np is the ccTLD for Nepal. It is managed by Mercantile Communication Pvt. Ltd.[1]

Rules and Restrictions[edit | edit source]

The .np domains are only available to Nepalese residents and businesses with a physical address in the country. Domain registrations under .np ccTLD are free of cost and registered on a first-come-first-serve basis, but terms and conditions apply.[2]

The registrations are made in third level beneath various second level generic domains. There is no registration directly under .np.[3]

As of October 2024, the official registry website is not loading.

Registration Guide[edit | edit source]

According to the website Webtech Nepal, to register a .np domain name, one should visit the Official Registration Website and create an account. However, as with the official website provided by IANA, this one is also a dead link.

Following the guide provided by Webtech Nepal, if the desired domain name is available, the next step is to prepare the required documents:

  • individuals will need a scanned copy of their citizenship, passport, or any government-issued ID that matches the domain name (e.g., yourname.np);
  • organizations will need a copy of their organization's registration certificate and a request letter on official letterhead. These documents shall be uploaded along the registration form in PDF or image format.

After submitting the form, the application will be reviewed. The approval process typically takes a few days, during which documents and eligibility are verified.

Once approved, the registrant will receive an email confirmation. The domain should be activated shortly after approval.[2]

Second-level Domains[edit | edit source]

  • .com.np: for any type of entity, company or individual;
  • .coop.np: for cooperatives;
  • .edu.np: limited to specific educational institutions such as, but not limited to, primary schools, middle schools, secondary schools, colleges, and universities;
  • .gov.np: limited to Nepal governmental entities and agencies;
  • .info.np: for any person or entity;
  • .name.np: any person or entity is permitted to register; however, registrations may be challenged later if they are not by individuals (or the owners of fictional characters) in accordance with the domain’s charter;
  • .net.np: for use by domains pointing to a distributed network of computers, or "umbrella" sites that act as the portal to a set of smaller websites;
  • .org.np: for use by non-profit organizations.[2]
