IDN Committee

The Internationalized Domain Name Committee (IDN Committee) was established by resolution 01.94, as presented on the Regular Meeting of the Board Minutes dated September 10, 2001, to serve as a general coordination body for the work on policy issues related to IDNs.[1]

Background[edit | edit source]

In March 2001, the ICANN Board created an Internal Working Group to investigate facts and identify issues that may arise concerning IDNs, which issued its final report on August 28, 2001.[2] Based on that report the ICANN Board created the IDN Committee, in order to "focus on the three policy areas identified by the GAC in its Melbourne Communiqué: promoting interoperability; preventing cybersquatting; and applying competition, market access, and consumer protection principles".[3]

Scope[edit | edit source]

The IDN Committee was responsible for promoting the coordination of the work of the ICANN supporting organizations, committees, and other groups on the policy issues arising from IDNs and to promote timely development of policy recommendations on those issues for consideration by the community and the ICANN Board.[4]
