In order to fulfill requirements of his AusAID and NZAID scholarships, Etuate returned to Tonga in August 2010 where he worked as a '''Systems Analyst for the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources in Tonga'''. While working in Tonga he applied for and was awarded the '''University of Auckland Doctoral scholarship''' under the Pasifika/Pacific category to further his studies towards a '''PhD at the University of Auckland in New Zealand'''. He started his PhD journey in February 2011 and successfully defended his '''thesis''' '''entitled: [https://researchspace.auckland.ac.nz/handle/2292/29689 Active longitudinal measurement in global networks and goodput recovery with network coding over high latency satellite links]''' in 2016. Later that year (July 2016) he became the '''first Tongan''' to graduate with a '''PhD in Computer Science''' from the '''University of Auckland'''.
