The New York City government through the DoITT applied for the .nyc geographical TLD with ICANN's new gTLD expansion program. The agency started its initiative since 2009 by issuing an RFP to interested parties to become its partner in managing the operations of the .nyc registry and a RFI to seek the advice and opinions regarding the plan and how to use and administer the .nyc domain string from internet stakeholders in the city.

Neustar was selected by the DoITT to become its partner in operating the .NYC TLD. Neustar agreed to help develop application and pay $185,000 application fee, post application fees and $25,000 annual fee once the TLD is approved by ICANN. The city of New York will get 40% of the total revenues generated from selling .nyc  domain names.
