The International Basketball Association (FIBA)' formerly known as Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur is an independent association responsible in defining the rules of basketball and it governs the international basketball competition. It is composed of 213 national basketball federations worldwide and its headquarters is located in Geneva, Switzerland. [1]
New gTLD Application
In April 25, 2012, FIBA confirmed its application for the .basketball generic top level domain name (gTLD) to ICANN's New gTLD Program. Its main objective is to protect the sport, its stakeholders and its approximately 450 million players and fans worldwide. The association partnered with ROAR Domains LLC and Top Level Domains Holding Ltd. to prepare its application with ICANN while Minds + Machines will provide its back-end registry solutions. [2]
Activities
The main activities of FIBA include: [3]
- Establish the official basketball rules, specifications of equipment and facilities. including the internal executive regulations for all international and Olympic competitions
- Responsible in controlling, governing and appointing international referees
- Regulates the transfer of players from one country to another
- Controls and governs all international competitions
The FIBA Academy
In 2008, the association established the FIBA Academy to provide world-class academic programs and ensure that all the athletes, administrators, coaches, event organizers and other entities involved in the basketball business worldwide will have access to an educational center that caters to their needs and updated with the latest basketball trends and developments.
