.tw

.tw is the ccTLD for Taiwan. It is managed by the Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC).

Rules and Restrictions

There are no particular restrictions to register a domain name under .tw.

Second-level Domains

The following second-level domains are available for registration:

• .edu.tw: applicants must be a legally registered education or research institute. These Domain Names shall be registered with the Ministry of Education;
• .gov.tw: applicants must be a government agency established by law. These Domain Names shall be registered with the National Development council.
• .mil.tw: applicants must be a national defense or military institute established by law. These Domain Names shall be registered with the Ministry of National Defense.
• com.tw: the applicant must be a corporation, firm, limited partnership, other profit-seeking association, or professional practitioners registered under the laws and have completed taxation registration, or a foreign corporation, limited partnership, or other association registered under competent national or state laws;
• .net.tw: the applicant must have obtained a license for the Class 1 or the Class 2 telecommunication enterprises pursuant to the Telecommunications Act, have registered as telecommunication enterprises or have obtained an approval to establish a network pursuant to the Telecommunications Management Act, or have obtained a license for network installation services.
• .org.tw: for foundations, non-profit organizations or non-departmental public bodies registered under the laws of the Republic of China; A foreign non-profit organization registered under its national, state or federal laws.
• .idv.tw: the applicant may be any individual person, provided their identity has been verified via emails;
• .game.tw, ebiz.tw, .club.tw: no particular restriction is applied, provided that the applicant’s identity has been verified via emails.

Characters

All domain names shall include at least 1 characters, and the maximum number of characters shall not exceed 63 characters. IDNs after punycode conversion also shall not exceed 63 characters.

The following characters are accepted: alphabetical characters in either upper or lower cases, numerical characters of (0-9) and connection symbol (-). The connection symbol (-) shall not exist at the first position or the last position. Neither shall it exist continuously;

Chinese IDNs are limited to second level domain registration under .tw, and they shall comprise at least 1 Chinese characters defined by the Big5 System.

Japanese, Korean, Thai, French and German IDNs are also limited to second level domain registration under .tw. Each of them shall consist of characters specified within the scope of the IDN Table which can be seen here. There must be at least one consecutive character from each language specific alphabet in combination or, in the French and German cases, at least one non-ASCII character in combination. In all cases, the domain name can also include the alphabetical characters in either upper or lower cases (A-Z), numerical characters (0-9) and connection symbol (-).
