The '''.budapest''' top-level domain will be marketed to registrants who want to associate themselves, their products, services, thoughts, ideas or anything else in a positive way with Budapest, as well as to those who want to communicate with them in an easily identifiable way. Therefore we believe that the great majority of registrants who apply for a '''.budapest''' domain name will do so because of its association with or because they want to reach those who do, and not for other reasons. More information:

.budapest is a GeoTLD in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The successful applicant is MMX, also known as Minds + Machines. It was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on the 23rd September, 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[1]

Background[edit | edit source]

The application for the .budapest string is supported by the government of the city of Budapest and it was submitted by MMX, which will use the back-end registry services of Nominet.[2] It has no proposed registration requirements that will limit registration to the citizens or companies physically located within Budapest.

Intended Use[edit | edit source]

.budapest is a new geographic top-level domain targeted to Budapest businesses and brands and Budapest-associated companies and products such as cuisine and tourism. There are no nexus requirements to register a .budapest domain name.

Application Details[edit | edit source]

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"Budapest is the capital and largest city of Hungary, and the seventh-largest city in the European Union. The city of Budapest has approximately 1.75 million inhabitants, with 3.3 million living in the Budapest greater metropolitan area.

Budapest was created by the unification of three cities - Buda, Óbuda and Pest - in 1873 and from this point on the Hungarian capital started to grow and develop rapidly. Its area now is 525 sq. km. Pest makes up for two-thirds of the city and is located on the eastern, flat bank of the Danube, and one-third is Buda, located on the western, hilly bank of the Danube.

Since 2000, tourism has grown steadily. The tourism industry made a direct contribution of $4.7 billion to Hungaryʹs total GDP (4.2%), much of it from Budapest. In 2005 there were 135 hotels and more than 15,000 rooms in Budapest, mostly in the three- and four-star segments. Moreover, the number of tourist arrivals in Budapest increased by 50 percent between 1991 and 2004, to reach almost 2.4 million: a total compound growth rate of 3 percent. .budapest is expected to assist with tourism and add to these totals.

Notable Users[edit | edit source]

The .budapest top-level domain will be marketed to registrants who want to associate themselves, their products, services, thoughts, ideas or anything else in a positive way with Budapest, as well as to those who want to communicate with them in an easily identifiable way. Therefore we believe that the great majority of registrants who apply for a .budapest domain name will do so because of its association with or because they want to reach those who do, and not for other reasons. In these ways, the .budapest top-level domain will bring a special association with Budapest to the top-level domain name space."[3]

Delegation Status[edit | edit source]

.budapest was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on the 23rd September, 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[4]

Contract Signed[edit | edit source]

On November 21, 2013 MMX received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .budapest after passing the Initial Evaluation.[5]
