ZookNic is a domain name aggregation and analysis service. It was started by Matthew Zook in 2001, in an effort to understand how communications technologies change the economic and geographic spaces in which businesses operate. From January 2001, the site began to collect domain name counts, geography, and market data on a weekly basis. That data is then parsed in numerous ways to track trends and tendencies in the industry. Much of ZookNic's research, including information about .com domains per U.S. state, total number of domains, top countries, and research papers and articles are available to the public for free. Other information is available for sale, with requests taken.[1]
The prominent registry for .com and other influential TLDs, Verisign, frequently uses ZookNic produced registration statistics for its quarterly and annual reports.[2]
