BLG received the Canadian National Law Firm Award during the 2010 Canadian Pro Bono Awards in recognition for the pro bono services and other programs the law firm provides and supports for the community.

Founding Firms

BLG was formed as a single national law firm in Canada after the merger of Howard Mackie of Calgary, Mc Master Gervais of Montreal, Scott & Aylen of Ottawa, Borden & Elliot of Toronto and Ladner Downs of Vancouver, on March 1, 2000.[2]

  1. Howard Mackie- founded in 1888 and one of the largest law firm in Western Canada with 150 employees including 66 professionals with expertise in local, national, and international corporate transactions.
  2. McMaster Gervais- considered as the most pioneer law firm in Canada since 1823 with 280 employees including 110 professionals specializing in legal practices in the fields of industrial, maritime, financial, and economic development in Montréal and entire Canada.McMaster Gervais law firm is one of the entities responsible in the establishment of the Canadian Railway System as well as the growth of mass transportation, finance and trade industry in the country.
  3. Scott & Aylen- founded in 1952, it is a fully bilingual law firm with expertise in multi-disciplinary partnership approach. The firm employs 168 individuals including 62 professionals during the merger and a business associate of Borden and Elliot until 1999.The lawn firm is well-known in its ability to bring together lawyers, patent agents, and trademark agents under one roof to provide complete legal and intellectual property services to its international or local clients.
  4. Borden & Elliot- Henry Borden and Beverly Elliot founded the firm in 1936 based in Toronto with 668 employees including 230 professionals during the merger. It is recognized as the largest and most experienced when it comes to litigation practices.
