Dr. Yassin Mshana is the Training Coordinator of the Tanzanian Distance Learning Centre (DLC), and a member of the Global Development Learning Network (GDLN).[1]
Yassin Mshana has 20 years experience as an engineer. During this period he has worked for several national and international organisations and training institutions as a lecturer, researcher and teaching fellow, as well as a design and technology teacher.[2]
He has been a member of various professional institutions including the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK); Institution of Engineers (Tanzania); Association of Teachers and Lecturers (UK); Poverty Reduction Learning Network for East and Central Africa and the e-ThinkTankTz for ICT Policy Development.
Career History
Prior to joining the Tanzanian DLC, between 1999 and 2000, Yassin Mshana was a Manager of the African Virtual University (AVU) project at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where he was the main contact between AVU Headquarters in Washington and the UDSM site. [3] From 1995 and 1997 he worked as a locum teacher and tutor in Design and Technology in the U.K.; in his last engagement he was the Head of Engineering and Technology Department of the SEEVIC College in London.
From 1989 to 1994, he was a Teaching Fellow and Research Worker at the City University of London where he acquired his interest in the application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in engineering. Dr Mshana undertook work as a consultant and a manager of various projects during this period of "ICT revolution". He has worked at the University of Dar es Salaam as a tutor and then a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering.
Through his work he has contributed in the promotion of broader use of ICT in both professional and voluntary activities; more recently, he has been involved in providing consultancy services for national and international organisations in the Southern African region, including DFID, FAO and UNICEF.
Education
Dr. Mshana holds a Ph.D. from the City University of London, a Masters degree in Technology from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, and a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam. In 1996, he obtained his Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from Roehampton Institute, University of Surrey where he specialised in teaching Design and Technology.[4]
