.coach is a new GTLD in ICANN's new gTLD program. It was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on the 27th November 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[1]
Successful Applicant
- Donuts (Koko Island, LLC), filed for 307 TLDs, each via different LLCs. The company is applying for .coach as a generic TLD. Daniel Schindler, EVP for Marketing & Sales at Donuts is the contact person in the application. [2] Their application is a non-brand related application.
Former Applicant
- Coach, Inc., a well-known American designer and manufacturer of the luxury handbag Coach and other fashion products. The company filed its application for the string as a Brand gTLD. [3]
Coach, Inc withdrew their application for the string in September 2014.[4]
Objections
An official Legal Rights Objection was filed by the applicant Coach Inc., against fellow applicant Donuts. The objection failed.[5]
A Legal Rights Objection, as defined by the ICANN approved mediator, WIPO, is when, "third parties may file a formal objection to an application on several grounds, including, for trademark owners and Intergovernmental Organizations (IGOs) [..] When such an objection is filed, an independent panel (comprised of one or three experts) will determine whether the applicant’s potential use of the applied-for gTLD would be likely to infringe [..] the objector’s existing trademark, or IGO name or acronym."[6]
Contract signed
On the 9th October 2014, Koko Island, LLC received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .coach after passing the Initial Evaluation.[7]
Delegation
.coach was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on the 27th November 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[8]
