More information:

.reise, which means "trip"/"tour"/"journey" in German, is a gTLD that was proposed in ICANN's New gTLD Program. The applicant was dotreise GmbH. Their application succeeded and was delegated to the Root Zone on 22 May 2014.[1]

In March 2015, dotreise GmbH sold its live TLD in a private auction, in which portfolio applicant Donuts won. Thus, Donuts became the Registry for the .reise string.[2]

A similar string, .reisen, is also managed by Donuts.[3]

Background[edit | edit source]

The applicant submitted Public Interest Commitments reinforcing its commitment to have restrictive registration policies.[4]

GAC Early Warning[edit | edit source]

Representatives of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland issued a joint GAC Early Warning against both .reise and .reisen. The warning system is noted as a strong recommendation on behalf of national governments to the ICANN Board that a given TLD application should be denied as it stands. Applicants are encouraged to work with objecting GAC members.[5]

The warning states that it is their belief that .reise and .reisen should be put in a contention set and considered together, and that the applicant should restrict the TLD to entities legitimately involved in the tourism industry.[6]

Application Details[edit | edit source]

The following is excerpted from the applicant's response to question #18:

"The string “reise” is a noun and can be translated with “journey”. The string “reise” is also a keyword which is included in millions of websites in German language. The .REISE TLD is intended to serve the German speaking travel and tourism industry and its customers. The .REISE TLD and its domains names shall facilitate consumers to intuitively find travel information on the Internet and shall contribute to more quality, reliability and consumer trust in travel topics on the Internet. In addition, we expect a more accurate representation of destinations with the help of the domain names used by the travel industry and the destinations themselves.

The domain names available with .REISE are concise and create a unique identity for the community members. Those providing and looking for information, goods and services in the Internet can thus intuitively come together. The .REISE domain names strengthen the identification amongst travel industry members, improve communication and make interaction easier, thus providing a stimulus for innovation and development. For both the travel industry as well as Internet user .REISE domain names will become an attractive address to visit. The registration of .REISE domains is restricted to travel industry members. Members are amongst others tour operators, travel agencies, destinations as well as governmental agencies, destination marketing agencies, associations, institutions and service providers of the tourism industry.

According to the .REISE registrant eligibility requirements policies the following registrant categories are eligible to register .REISE domain names: - tour operators, travel agencies, transport companies, hospitality industry, outgoing agencies, incoming agencies, destination marketing agencies, destinations, reference book publishers, information portals, booking software companies - governmental agencies, associations, educational institutions and institutions and service providers of the tourism industry"[7]

Contract Signed[edit | edit source]

On 13 March 2014 dotreise GmbH received a Registry Agreement signed by ICANN for .reise after passing all the required processes needed to become a Registry Operator for the string.[8]

Delegation and Availability[edit | edit source]

.reise was delegated to the Root Zone of the DNS on 22 May, 2014, completing the successful application for the string.[1]
