Zoë Baird is a lawyer, and president of the Markle Foundation. She was Bill Clinton's nominee for United States Attorney General in 1993, but later withdrew her nomination when the news of her hiring illegal immigrants to serve as her chauffeur and nanny, and neglecting to pay their social security taxes, broke. She paid $2,900 in fines for the infraction. [1]

Zoe Baird recieved a B.A. in political science in 1974 from the University of California, Berkeley and a J.D. from the Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley. [2]

She acts as the co-Chair of the Markle Task Force on National Security in the Information Age and participates in the Steering Committee of Markle's Connecting for Health initiative. She is also an honorary trustee of The Brookings Institution and serves as secretary and treasurer of the U.S. China Youth Forum. She is a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Law Institute. She also serves on the Boards of Save the Children, the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Institute for State Studies at Western Governors University, the Chubb Corporation, Boston Properties, and the Brookings Institution.

She founded Children America and serves on the Board of Lawyers.[3]

Career History

Zoe Baird worked as a clerk for U.S. District Judge Albert C. Wollenberg from 1977 to 1978; and from 1980 until 1981 she was the Associate Counsel to President Jimmy Carter, and an attorney in the Office of Legal Counsel of the U.S. Department of Justice. [4]

She left public service for a time and became a partner in the international law firm of O’Melveny & Myers; [5] Ms. Baird also worked as a counselor and staff executive of General Electric Co., from 1986 to 1990. [6]

In 1993, she joined the administration of President Bill Clinton, and she served on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and on the International Competition Policy Advisory Committee to the Attorney General throughout his tenure as President. She worked with the Bush administration when she was a part of the Technology & Privacy Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Defense from 2003 to 2004.

Ms. Baird has been a Director of Boston Properties Inc., the General Partner of Boston Properties Limited Partnership since 2005, The Chubb Corporation since 1998, and Zurn Industries Inc. since August 1993.

She has been a Director of John and Mary R. Markle Foundation since January 1998; and since 2001 she has co-Chaired with Jim Barksdale the Markle Task Force on National Security in the Information Age.[7]

She was a Senior Visiting Scholar of Yale Law School from 1996 to 1997, and has also served there as Senior Research Associate.

Since March 2000, Ms.Baird has been an Independent Director of Convergys Corporation.
