Invented in the early 1990s by [[Tim Berners-Lee]], HTTP is the standard protocol over which much of the internet transfers data.  Specifically, requests for web pages are handled largely over HTTP or one of its variants.

HTTP is an acronym for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It is a standard networking protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia systems which has been used in the World Wide Web since 1990.[1] The specifications for HTTP was developed by Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of World Wide Web.[2]
