The Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC) is a non-profit organization; it was officially funded by the Directorate General Telecommunications of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, and the Computer Society of the Republic of China, on December 29, 1999.[1]
TWNIC provides the registration service of .com.tw, .net.tw, .org.tw and .idv.tw. TWNIC has authorized Asia Pacific Online Service Inc.(APOL), PC home Online Co. Ltd , Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd (HiNet), Digital United Inc .(SeedNet), TISNet Technology Inc.(TISNET), Net-Chinese Co., Ltd as domain name registrars.
During 2006 TWNIC has conducted a survey on the domain name use of .tw. The survey gives an insight into the trends in Taiwan[2]
In 2007, ICANN and TWNIC has hosted a meeting called "Toward the New Era of Internet", focusing on Internationalized domain names, Internet security key.[3] In 2010, TWNIC has conducted a seminar on "Broadband Policy and Development" at the 2010 Taipei IT Month.[4]
History
- March 1994 to June 1996- TWNIC was setup as 2 year experimental program.
- June 1996 to April 1998- operation of the Taiwan Network Information Center under the Computer Society of the ROC (CSROC)
- April 1998 to December 1999- The NII decided that the Directorate-General of Telecommunication was responsible for TWNIC and it was finally registered on 29 December,1999. [5]
