.athens is rumored to be a GeoTLD being sought after by the Municipality of Athens, Greece, in ICANN's new gTLD program. At this point, the only corroborating evidence seems to be that the government set-out to get a US trademark for ".athens" and "dot athens" in Februrary, 2010. They claimed that it was for a future registry in a letter to that office.
