He started out as a student film journalist. He has written and edited numerous programming books covering technologies such as HTML, Java, C++, C#, Classic ASP, Perl, ASP.NET, Javascript, Fireworks, and Visual Studio for a variety of publishers including Wrox, Friends Of Ed, Glasshaus, Apress, Wiley, Microsoft Press, Sys-con, Addison Wesley, SAMS, and O’Reilly Associates.[2]The books he has worked on have now sold over 750,000 copies worldwide and have led him to further work with Computer Bookshops, PAG, and Microsoft's e-Learning wing as well as a spell as a web designer with 3Form Ltd.

In 2005, Dan started work as Technical Manager for Co-operative IT and Midcounties Co-operative Domains Ltd, who act as registry operator for the dotCoop sponsored top-level domain name for DCLLC and ICANN. He is now a senior developer for Co-operative Web, a software development workers’ co-operative based in Birmingham, UK.
